City Clerk's Office

The Clerk’s Office serves as the gateway to open and accessible government. The office provides quality services to the Mayor, Common Council, staff, and the public in an efficient and responsive manner to create the highest standards of ethics and integrity. We serve the citizens of Ashland through a variety of services, and we provide a dependable resource for information and services provided by the City of Ashland.

Note that final election results are handled by the Ashland County clerk.

Responsibilities of the Clerk

The Mayor, with the Common Council approval, appoints the City Clerk. The Clerk's office staff is responsible for: 

  • Administer oaths and affirmations
  • Assume care and custody of the corporate seal and all papers and records of the city
  • Attend meetings of the Common Council and keep a full record of its proceedings
  • Serve as Secretary to City Council
  • Process payments for utilities, licenses, boat launch, overnight parking, and more
  • Coordinate legal publications
  • Construct Council agendas and minutes
  • Liaison to the public
  • Manage City insurance
  • Conduct Board of Review and keep Property Assessment information
  • Supervise election activities
  • Conduct Board of Canvass 
  • Issuance and recording of licenses and permits
  • Maintenance of ordinances and resolutions approved by Council
