We've received calls from residents of surrounding townships regarding an Ashland Wheel Tax charge on their vehicle registrations.
Were you charged the City Wheel Tax, even though you live in an outlying township? Here are the steps to request your refund from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation:
- Correct the township on your registration by using either the form (mail in or take to the DMV) or website linked below:
- *MV1020 Title/Registration Correction Request (wisconsindot.gov)
- Wisconsin Department of Transportation Update or verify vehicle kept in information (wisconsindot.gov)
- Fill out the DOT LICENSE PLATE/REGISTRATION REFUND REQUEST form linked below; this form must be mailed in to the department
- *MV2030 (wisconsindot.gov)
NOTE: the City Administration spoke with the DMV concerning this matter on February 22, 2024; while the form indicates that your renewal stickers and registration should be included, the DMV agent advised NOT to send them for this minor issue of a wheel tax refund. Please retain those documents in your possession.
- Here is a sample explanation to include in the Reason for requesting refund section of the form:
"VEHICLE IS REGISTERED IN TOWN OF GINGLES, BUT WAS CHARGED $20 WHEELAGE TAX FOR CITY OF ASHLAND. WHEELAGE TAX REFUND OF $20 REQUESTED."
If you still have questions, please feel free to reach out to City Hall at (715) 682-7071.
