Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I'm going out of town and need to pay my taxes before December 31st -- what do I need to do?
A: You may pay online and print a receipt immediately (third-party processing fees apply) or drop a check in the mail from your winter destination by December 31st, 2025. Tax payments are receipted as of the postmark date.
Q: How can I change my tax bill mailing address? I own a property in Ashland, but don't live there.
A: Real Estate tax bill mailing addresses are controlled by the county tax lister. Contact the county office directly to request a mailing address change or use the online form.
Q: Why is my tax bill so different from my neighbor's? How can I request a review?
A: All parcels are taxed according to their assessed value at the same percentage rate. If one parcel has a higher tax bill than the next-door neighbor's, it's because the property is valued higher on the assessment records. If you believe your parcel is valued incorrectly, you may contact the city's assessor to request a review.
Q: I'm not sure if my mortgage company is handling my real estate tax payments -- how can I find out?
A: Real estate escrow payments are arranged directly with your mortgage lender. You may search the public tax portal to see if payment has been made.
Q: My tax bill is confusing -- is there a guide to reading it?
A: Yes! Courtesy of UW Extension, please see the following example as a guide to understanding what makes up your property tax bill(s): Property Tax Bill Example with Explanations
